As announced, this service will initially support Bitcoin (BTC) and Ethereum (ETH), and more cryptocurrencies will be added. Starting in April, institutional clients will have access to the new service, which provides custody and settlement for digital assets. Clearstream will rely on its majority-owned subsidiary, Crypto Finance, to ensure secure handling to manage sub-custody operations. The Role of Crypto Finance and Regulatory Approval Crypto Finance will be playing an important role in making this expansion possible. The firm secured a Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework license, which allows it to operate legally across Europe. This license strengthens Clearstream’s position in the digital asset space by ensuring regulatory compliance. MiCA is a set of rules for managing digital assets the same way across the European Union. It removes rule differences and gives institutions a clear way to follow regulations. By expanding its service offerings, Clearstream is building a more complete range of services for institutional clients. The company aims to provide investors with a reliable and efficient way to access new asset classes. This crypto custody service will integrate with existing post-trading systems, making the transition into crypto easier for institutions. Clearstream is also preparing to take advantage of future changes in stablecoins and digital assets. These updates could link traditional finance with the crypto world. Deutsche Börse’s Growing Interest in Digital Assets Clearstream’s move is part of a larger strategy by Deutsche Börse to expand into the digital asset sector. This comes despite backlash from major industry players like Tether . The German stock exchange recently launched a regulated platform for spot trading cryptocurrencies aimed at institutional investors. The CEO of Crypto Finance Group emphasized that these steps are making Deutsche Börse a leader in digital assets. The company now offers direct crypto services while ensuring a smooth connection between digital and traditional financial systems. Last December, the financial bank tackled the regulatory risks that have plagued institutions by using public blockchains like Ethereum. This came after it introduced Project Dama 2, an innovative Layer 2 asset-servicing platform, in November 2024.
