Web3-focused investment giant ABCDE has officially halted all new funding efforts, marking a major strategic shift for the $400 million fund. In an April 19 post on X, co-founder Du Jun—who also founded the Huobi exchange— announced that while ABCDE will not raise capital for a second phase or invest in new projects, it remains committed to supporting its current portfolio. Jun was clear that this move doesn’t stem from financial distress. Instead, it reflects a growing disillusionment with the state of early-stage crypto investing. “Many projects are extremely short-sighted and only think about how to get listed on the exchange as soon as possible,” Jun noted. “What is left behind is often a mess.” ABCDE has deployed over $40 million into 30+ ventures across three years, maintaining what Jun claims is a globally competitive internal rate of return. Its portfolio leans heavily into future-facing infrastructure: 28% in Bitcoin scaling tech, 16% in Ethereum LSDFi, and 12% in L2s and smart contract platforms , according to data from Cryptorank. Vernal Incubator Signals Next Chapter in Web3 Strategy While ABCDE presses pause on further investments, it’s not the end of Du Jun’s involvement in the space. Just weeks prior, he introduced a new incubator initiative named Vernal. The venture is set to reveal its first batch of incubated projects and shareholder lineup by May. Jun described Vernal as a strategic response to the prevailing issues he sees in the ecosystem. Instead of financial speculation, Vernal will focus on deep incubation and long-term value creation, steering away from the “hype-first, utility-later” attitude that has plagued recent fundraising cycles. This pivot comes shortly after ABCDE’s final investment in Soon (Solana Optimistic Network), an Ethereum Layer-2 that touts faster block times than Solana itself. The project raised $22 million via NFT sales to fuel its mainnet launch. Industry Voices Echo Call for Reform in Crypto Tokenomics Jun’s critique aligns with sentiments recently expressed by Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson at Paris Blockchain Week. Hoskinson urged the next wave of crypto projects to rethink tokenomics and embrace cooperation over competition. “You can’t build a global ecosystem this way,” he said, referring to adversarial market structures. “The incumbents are much larger.” With ABCDE stepping back and Vernal stepping in, the message is clear: longevity, not listing, is the new goalpost.
