A new Ethereum Improvement Proposal (EIP-7983), co-authored by co-founder Vitalik Buterin and developer Toni Wahrstätter, aims to enhance network stability by capping the maximum gas usage of a single transaction. According to the proposal , this limit is set at 16,777,216 gas. Ethereum’s New Proposal Will Change Its Current System This represents a change from the current system, where a single transaction can utilize nearly the entire block’s gas limit, which exceeds 30 million gas units. Notably, the goal of EIP-7983 is to simplify and enhance the safety of significant transactions. Currently, a single transaction can consume excessive resources, which hinders the network’s ability to validate blocks and may lead to instability. Therefore, limiting the amount of gas used for each transaction will help Ethereum provide a more reliable and efficient environment for validators and developers. Furthermore, this change aligns with Ethereum’s plan to enhance its structure by breaking down its large, complex design into smaller, more manageable parts. If accepted, EIP-7983 could represent a significant milestone in Ethereum’s growth. It would strengthen Ethereum’s position as a strong and scalable platform for decentralized applications (dApps). Ethereum Developer Proposes Faster Blocks Last month, an Ethereum core developer proposed a major change that could significantly speed up the network. EIP-7782, presented on June 21, proposes reducing the network’s block time in half, from 12 seconds to six. The goal is to improve transaction confirmation times and enhance the overall user experience across the ecosystem. Shorter slot times mean that new blocks are proposed twice as often, resulting in more responsive user interfaces and quicker inclusion of transactions. Wallets would display more accurate and up-to-date balances, while layer-2 networks could sync with the Ethereum mainnet more efficiently. The proposal could also bring meaningful improvements to decentralized finance (DeFi) . Additionally, having more block producers per minute would make it more difficult for any single entity to censor transactions. Ethereum Gas Limit And The Buterin Template It is worth noting that these upgrades align with Buterin’s broader vision for the blockchain . He has often stated that Ethereum needs to increase its base-layer capacity, even as Layer 2 solutions gain popularity. Buterin and researcher Dankrad Feist have long advocated for raising gas limits, arguing that it is necessary to meet the increasing demand on the network.
