The World Food Programme USA (WFP USA) announced that it is now accepting donations of cryptocurrencies including Bitcoin, Ethereum, Dogecoin and over 80 other digital assets in an effort to fill critical funding gaps and fight global hunger. US World Food Program Accepts Bitcoin, Dogecoin Donations Amid Funding Crisis The move comes as the organization aims to raise $25 million through its Emergency Hunger Relief Fund to support food aid to the 58 million people facing hunger worldwide. Although WFP USA operates independently of the UN's World Food Programme, it shares its mission to address food insecurity in some of the world's most vulnerable regions. The push to embrace crypto donations comes after severe funding cuts during the Trump administration, which halted U.S. financial support for emergency food aid efforts in 14 countries, including Afghanistan, Syria and Yemen. WFP officials have warned that the funding cuts could have devastating consequences, describing them as a potential “death sentence” for millions of people already on the brink of starvation. A Modern Approach to Humanitarian Aid Dorota Amin, WFP USA’s director of philanthropy and partnerships, said the organization is embracing emerging technologies like blockchain and crypto not just out of innovation but necessity. “Traditional aid systems are under great pressure. Embracing new technologies like blockchain and cryptocurrency is not just a choice, it is a necessity.” The benefits of crypto donations go beyond speed and efficiency.
