GA Spark (@1themoonshot), a well-known entrepreneur and crypto investor, recently shared a video clip featuring Nancy Beaton, the President of Uphold U.S. and Chief Revenue & Marketing Officer at Uphold Global. In the clip, Beaton discusses the versatility of Uphold’s trading platform, particularly emphasizing how users can convert RLUSD across multiple assets. According to Beaton, “You can take RLUSD to Bitcoin, Bitcoin to RLUSD, you could take RLUSD to gold,” summarizing that users can trade “anything to anything.” This comment led GA Spark to assert that users could convert RLUSD directly into gold and that every RLUSD transaction would automatically bridge through XRP. LISTEN UP! Uphold CEO Nancy Beaton just dropped a bomb: "You could convert $RLUSD into GOLD!" And guess what? Every $RLUSD transaction will automatically bridge through #XRP ! The future is unfolding right now are you paying attention? pic.twitter.com/2OyRNZKALz — GA Spark (@1themoonshoot) April 16, 2025 He described the feature as a major development and urged followers to pay attention to a transformation in how digital assets interact. While XRP serves as a bridge currency in many cases, GA Spark’s assertion was wrong and was quickly corrected by experts in the community. Addressing the Misinterpretation In response, Crypto Eri (@sentosumosaba), a respected member of the XRP community, provided important clarification. She noted that while RLUSD can be used to buy various assets on Uphold, the assumption that every RLUSD transaction bridges through XRP is incorrect. She explained that bridging through XRP would only happen if the RLUSD transaction is on the XRPL and if the trading pair includes XRP or if it represents the most efficient path for the transaction. This mirrors previous statements made by Ripple’s Chief Technology Officer (CTO), David Schwartz. Schwartz explained that each asset would be used where it fits best. Schwartz has previously highlighted XRP’s unique role in helping the ecosystem function. While the asset is crucial to the working of the XRPL, Beaton’s comments were primarily about the versatility of Uphold’s cryptocurrency exchange and not XRP or the XRPL. Clarifying Uphold’s Role and How Bridging Works Uphold allows users to trade between several assets, including cryptocurrencies, fiat currencies, and commodities like gold. The ability to convert anything to anything is one of many features, but the mechanism by which these conversions occur depends on the platform’s routing logic and liquidity availability. While the XRPL is designed for interoperability and efficient asset exchange, it’s not a universal bridge for all RLUSD transactions by default. The automatic use of XRP as a bridge asset only occurs under certain conditions, including the presence of trading pairs and when it offers the best path in terms of cost and speed.
