OpenAI may re-enter robotics to potentially compete with Tesla’s Optimus

OpenAI is reportedly stepping into the humanoid robot game. The ChatGPT maker is considering building human-like robots which could be a major coup in artificial intelligence-powered robotics. However, this development comes after Elon Musk’s Tesla recently showcased its Optimus robots. The AI giant used to operate a robotics division when it first appeared on the scene. However, it scrapped it in 2021. Co-founder Wojciech Zaremba stated that the division was closed due to a lack of training data for advancing intelligence systems. Times have changed for the IOT world after several major breakthroughs in AI systems and hardware over the last few years. OpenAI’s robotic comeback OpenAI is playing catch-up in a competitive space dominated by players like Boston Dynamics and Tesla. It has invested in robotics startups like Figure AI, 1X Technologies, and Physical Intelligence. After bagging positive results in the AI sector, the company seems to be focusing on integrating GPT models into robots. According to the report , OpenAI is discussing humanoid robot development. While no roadmap has been confirmed so far, the company recently posted job listings for robotics research. It is looking for engineers to train multimodal AI models to “unlock new capabilities” for partner robots. If the AI giant builds its own humanoid robots, it will enter a fiercely competitive arena. Tesla’s Optimus and Boston Dynamics’ bots are already making waves. Earlier, OpenAI rolled out its ChatGPT Search feature to all free users, enabling real-time web data fetching. Initially available to paid subscribers, it lets ChatGPT access live information by tapping a globe icon, making it more interactive and up-to-date. It is also adding maps and a “Search with Advanced Voice” feature Elon Musk’s vision for Optimus At the We, Robot event, Tesla stole the show not once but twice. First, it showcased the futuristic Cybercab, and second, with an update on the Optimus humanoid robot. Musk’s vision for a fully autonomous taxi with no steering wheel and no pedals is expected to start production in 2026. Elon Musk also made the ambitious promise of cheaper rides than mass transit. Tesla’s Optimus turned out to be the showstopper of the event. Elon Musk even said, “It can do anything.” Babysit, mow your lawn, walk your dog, even serve drinks. “The Optimus will walk amongst you,” he declared. Priced between $20K-$30K, Tesla’s CEO claims that Optimus will be the “most significant product ever created.” He even thinks all 8 billion humans will want one. Optimus Gen 2 was introduced in December 2023 and it looked like it has evolved fast. The robot is able to fold shirts, walk better, and have tactile sensors for precise tasks. Meanwhile, Tesla first teased the Optimus concept back in 2021 during AI Day. Fast forward, and Gen 2 is showcasing real progress, from folding clothes to watering plants.
