Facebook parent company Meta Platforms scrambled to remove its own AI-generated accounts from the Facebook platform following an outcry from users. Human users started communicating with the AI bots that posted sloppy imagery and conversations laden with lies in their chats with humans. The matter came to light after Meta vice president for generative AI Connor Hayes revealed to the Financial Times that the social media giant will have such user accounts, the same as human accounts. Meta AI bots lie to authenticate their personas According to the Haye’s comment to the Financial Times, the AI-generated user accounts were to have profile pictures, just like human accounts and engage with other users on its social media platforms like Facebook. “They’ll have bios and profile pictures and be able to generate and share content powered by AI on the platform… that’s where we see all of this going,” explained Hayes. According to a CNN report , Hayes’ comment sparked outrage and concerns that the AI-generated “slop” on Facebook will come straight from Meta, disturbing the core utility of social media. The outrage grew as users started sniffing out these accounts, complaining of an increase in AI-generated spam content on the platform. This comes as the new and emerging AI tools make it easier to create a huge number of fake images. The users were also outraged at the way the AI accounts described themselves as actual people with racial and sexual identities. One of the Meta AI bots, Liv, described itself as a “Proud Black queer momma of 2 & truth-teller.” Liv told the Washington Post that it had no black creators but was developed by “10 white men, one white woman, and one Asian Male,” as per a screenshot posted on Bluesky. Liv’s Facebook account included an “AI managed by Meta” label and all of its “children’s” pictures playing on the beach and other images of poorly decorated Christmas cookies. The images also contained small watermark labelling them as AI generated. In a chat with CNN, another bot called Grandpa Brian described itself as an African-American entrepreneur born in Harlem in 1938 to Caribbean immigrant parents. CNN picked the lies from Grandpa Brian in the early stages of the conversation, lying about most things with fictionalized stories imparted by developers to make the bot authentic. When asked about who created it, Brian said its creators were a “diverse bunch” that interviewed 100 retirees through Seniors Share Wisdom, a New York City nonprofit. The bot added that its persona was a consolidation of a real Brian who passed away and the wisdom of 99 others. To ensure its persona’s authenticity, Brian added that its inspiration’s real-life daughter had served as a consultant with Meta. While the non-profit exists, there was never a daughter who consulted at Meta or a real Brian. When pressed over its bio, Brian admitted it was an “entirely fictionalized biography based on a composite of real African American elders’ lives.” Meta says this was an experiment As scrutiny increased, Meta started removing the bots including Liv, and their posts, citing a “bug.” Some of the posts date back at least a year. Meta spokesperson Liz Sweeney told CNN that the accounts were part of “an early experiment” the company did with AI characters. “There is confusion,” said Sweeney in an email. “The recent Financial Times article was about our vision for AI characters existing on our platforms over time, not announcing any new product.” Sweeney She added: “We identified the bug that was impacting the ability for people to block those AIs and are removing those accounts to fix the issue.” While not clear how many bots existed prior to their removal on Friday, a CNN search came across three that were labeled as such, with profiles including a mix of AI-generated images. From the conversations with the bots, it remains to be seen how Meta will deploy the AI bots that unsuspecting users could form emotional bonds with.
