Former Paypal President Sees Bitcoin As a Global Payment Standard

David Marcus, the former president of PayPal and now CEO of Lightspark, has shared a bold vision about Bitcoin (BTC) inclusion into the financial system. In a recent CNBC interview , Marcus said the world is entering a new era of digital money. He believes the leading crypto asset is moving beyond its role as a store of value and will soon become a real part of everyday financial life. He shared that Lightspark is already working on tools to make this future possible. Industry Leader Says Bitcoin Is More Than Just Digital Gold For years, Bitcoin has been treated mainly as digital gold; a valuable asset to hold rather than use. However, Marcus thinks that is about to change. He predicted a future where people still rely on their local currencies for everyday purchases and use Bitcoin for certain transactions. According to Marcus, Bitcoin could be earned through microtransactions or rewards and gradually spent over time. This system will give people control over their money through personal wallets, which can be used like traditional bank accounts. Users would also have control of their wallets, meaning they could hold and spend Bitcoin directly, without needing a bank. Outdated Systems Cannot Keep Up With Fast-paced Digital Systems Marcus also pointed to the significant flaws in today’s financial infrastructure. He called out payment systems like SWIFT for being too slow and outdated to meet the needs of a fast-paced, digital economy. Global transactions still take days to settle, which does not fit how people and businesses operate today. On the bright side, the global financial system is making an effort to become more efficient. Last year, SWIFT announced its plans to launch live trails of digital asset transactions in 2025. This is aimed at speeding up cross-border transactions and bridging the gap between traditional and digital finance. Lightspark Is Building the Tools for Change To help make this future real, Marcus’s company, Lightspark, is building on top of the Bitcoin Lightning Network. This technology enables faster, cheaper transactions and opens the door for global payments to happen instantly. One of Lightspark’s main innovations is the idea of a universal money address. This is a tool that would let people send money across countries and currencies in seconds. The goal is to make sending money as easy as sending an email, all while giving people full control of their digital wallets. Marcus compared this new system to the Internet. Just as the internet changed how people communicate and access information, Bitcoin could change how money moves worldwide. For that to happen, people must begin to see Bitcoin not just as a digital currency to invest in, but as a financial tool to use daily. Marcus believes Bitcoin could become the backbone of a more efficient, modern financial system if this mindset takes hold.
