Gen Z Prefers Bitcoin to Real Estate Investments: Report

Response from a survey conducted by Hong Kong brokerage firm Futu Securities suggests that Gen Z is more interested in Bitcoin (BTC) than in real estate. Precisely, people in this demographic see as much as three times more potential in the former than the latter. Will You Take 2 Bitcoin or $128,000? Gen Z refers to the generation, aged 18 to 24, that grew up with widespread access to the Internet. Hence, they are largely considered as digital natives. About 67% of the respondents in the survey believe that BTC is a more reliable path to creating wealth. There was only about 21% who had a similar feeling towards real estate investments. Futu Securities reported that 23% of this Gen Z are content with having just two Bitcoins in their portfolio instead of making a down payment of HK$1 million, which is approximately $128,400, for a home. At the time of writing, a unit of BTC is valued at $104,737.69 , even after losing 0.69% of its price gain in 24 hours. Therefore, two Bitcoin would be worth over $209,000. Noteworthy, this marks a major shift in the view of financial security, especially for Hong Kong where the symbol of wealth and stability previously involved the traditional dream of homeownership. Bitcoin Records 125% Growth in a Year The reason for the tilt towards Bitcoin is not far-fetched. Over the years, the leading digital asset has demonstrated its potential. After struggling to move above $47,000 in 2023, Bitcoin kicked off positive momentum last year and recorded a 125% price gain before the end of the year Bitcoin hit a new AAll-Time High (ATH) multiple times in 2024, reflecting its capacity to grow exponentially. It moved past a $100,000 mark before settling at $97,000 in December 2024. Less than a month later and it is now trading above $104,000. Liquidity of Bitcoin And Complex of Real Estate Transactions On the flip side, property affordability and acquisition in Hong Kong has become tougher on the younger generation, triggered by the Great Recession. As part of the comparison between the two asset classes, Bitcoin is liquid and could be traded at any time. Real estate transactions are somewhat complex and may not be instant. This makes Bitcoin a more attractive investment option. The introduction of Bitcoin and Ethereum ETFs in Hong Kong may have successfully expanded the list of crypto-related assets that this Gen Z can invest in.
