Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Talks About Altcoins: “Institutional Investors Seem Ultra Bullish on Altcoins, I Think…”

Bitwise Chief Investment Officer Matt Hougan believes that institutional investors’ bullishness towards cryptocurrencies is justified and claims that investing in altcoins now can yield significant returns in the long term. In a report to clients today, Hougan highlighted the stark contrast between institutional and retail investors in the crypto market. While institutional investors are showing record levels of optimism, retail investors are increasingly pessimistic. According to Hougan, investment professionals are allocating more capital to cryptocurrencies, particularly through exchange-traded funds (ETFs). Hougan also noted that Washington’s stance on crypto has shifted dramatically, with the U.S. government, particularly under the Trump administration, evolving from a perceived threat to a strong supporter of the industry. Additionally, the growing interest from nation states could further accelerate crypto adoption. Bitwise’s on-chain sentiment score is currently at one of its lowest levels, reflecting widespread disappointment. Hougan noted that this aligns with other sentiment indicators and discussions within the crypto community. He noted that retail investors are discouraged by the fact that altcoin assets have largely underperformed Bitcoin, with only a few exceptions. Despite the market woes, retail investors continue to trust the institutional outlook. He noted that ETFs and companies have purchased more than 100,000 BTC this year alone, far surpassing the 18,000 BTC mined in the same period. Looking ahead, he sees altcoins in their strongest positions yet, but their market trajectory remains complex. With regulatory clarity increasing, stablecoins being considered a “national priority” in the U.S., and institutional trust rising, Hougan expects mainstream adoption of decentralized finance (DeFi) applications. *This is not investment advice.
