Libra Scandal: Allegations Surface Over Payments to Argentine President’s Sister

A fresh controversy has erupted around the embattled Libra (LIBRA) token, as new reports claim that one of its key figures allegedly boasted about being able to pay Argentine President Javier Milei’s sister in exchange for promotional favors. According to a Feb. 18 report by La Nacion, text messages suggest that Hayden Davis, a figure tied to Libra and CEO of Kelsier Ventures, told a crypto executive that financial incentives could sway Milei’s actions on social media. The leaked messages reportedly show Davis discussing direct payments to Karina Milei, Argentina’s presidential general secretary and the president’s close advisor. In one message, Davis allegedly stated, “I send $$ to his sister and he does whatever I say and does what I want.” Another message suggested that Milei could be made to tweet or even meet in person to promote the memecoin. However, the unnamed crypto investment firm that received Davis’ texts reportedly refused the offer. When questioned about the allegations, Davis denied the claims. A spokesperson told CoinDesk that Davis had no recollection of sending such messages and could find no records of them on his phone. Furthermore, Davis denied making any payments to either Javier or Karina Milei. Milei Distances Himself Amid Calls for Impeachment Despite the growing scandal, President Milei has attempted to downplay his involvement with the Libra token . Speaking in a Feb. 17 interview with Todo Noticias, he refuted claims that he had actively promoted LIBRA. Instead, he insisted that he had merely “spread the word” and that the accusations against him were politically motivated. “I did not promote that. What I did, I spread the word,” he stated, addressing the fraud lawsuits that have emerged in the wake of the token’s dramatic collapse. Once boasting a market capitalization of $4.5 billion, the LIBRA token saw a catastrophic decline of nearly 95%, wiping out billions in speculative gains. LIBRA: A Learning Experience? As opposition figures call for his impeachment, Milei has remained defiant, asserting that the state “plays no role” in the situation. However, he did acknowledge that the scandal has served as a learning experience, stating that he needs to “start setting filters” regarding his future associations. Meanwhile, Davis and Kelsier Ventures are believed to have profited handsomely from the LIBRA launch, reportedly netting around $100 million. Davis, however, has denied holding or selling any tokens.
