French authorities have arrested more than 12 individuals, including several minors, in connection with two crypto-related kidnapping cases in Paris. The arrests, reported by local outlet Le Parisien on May 26, mark a major breakthrough in investigations into what appears to be a coordinated criminal network targeting individuals linked to the crypto industry. Charges against the arrested individuals include kidnapping, attempted kidnapping, and criminal conspiracy. Authorities believe that a broader criminal organization may be orchestrating these attacks, potentially using social media platforms to recruit young accomplices. CEO Family’s Failed Kidnapping One of the most alarming incidents occurred on May 13, when three men allegedly attempted to abduct the daughter and grandson of Pierre Noizat , the co-founder and CEO of the French crypto exchange Paymium. The attempt took place in broad daylight on a Paris street and was captured on video by bystanders. The footage shows Noizat’s daughter bravely fighting back, while passersby intervened, ultimately foiling the kidnapping attempt. In another earlier case in May, French authorities successfully rescued the father of a crypto marketing entrepreneur, who had been held hostage for a ransom demand reportedly ranging from €5 million to €7 million. While arrests related to the attempted harm to Noizat’s family have not yet been made, six individuals allegedly connected to the kidnapping of the entrepreneur’s father have been identified and jailed. These include the suspected kidnappers themselves. This isn’t the first such incident in France this year. Earlier, David Balland, co-founder of crypto hardware wallet maker Ledger, was abducted from his home, with kidnappers allegedly demanding cryptocurrency as ransom. Balland was safely rescued by French police days later. Authorities Ramp Up Security Measures In response to this troubling trend, France’s Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau has stepped up security protocols to protect crypto entrepreneurs and their families. The move comes amid growing concern over the safety of high-net-worth individuals in the digital asset space. Data compiled by cypherpunk and Casa co-founder Jameson Lopp shows that France has experienced six crypto-related ransom or kidnapping attempts in 2025 alone—three of which occurred in Paris. In light of these events, industry figures are increasingly turning to professional security teams and bodyguards to deter further threats, underscoring the real-world risks associated with high-profile involvement in cryptocurrency.
